Over the last month or so, I’ve been thinking about old blogs and journals I’ve kept and how much I love re-reading them years later. When I was little, I was notorious for getting a brand new journal for every vacation we took and swearing I would keep up with it, and then letting it take a second seat to my gameboy for the last week of the trip…POKEMON, GOTTA CATCH ‘EM ALL!!
When re-reading these half finished old gems, I’ve realized it’s probably due to the fact that I was absolutely crazy for detail. Not in a, ‘wow! what a good description!’ kind of way but in a ‘We had lunch at pizza hut today. I got a cheese personal pan pizza and an orange soda. Dana got a pepperoni personal pan pizza and a grape soda. Erica had a cheese personal pan pizza but scraped a lot of the cheese off and I can’t remember what she had to drink. Dad had a sausage personal pan pizza and drank a water. Mom can’t eat cheese so she got something else, I think it was a burrito.”
It’s easy to see how a youngster like that could get overwhelmed trying to choc so much into one tiny little Barbar journal. But several years later, I am finally drawing a moral out of all of this. Much like little Greg, I often try to tackle way too much in my journaling, switching back and forth from the paper journal to the blog, to the other journal, etc. and end up without enough time, anxious about forgetting what an incredible day I’ve had, or not documenting that one outrageous moment I had perfectly phrased in my head.
Although I love all of the different ways to tell a story tumblr offers, I miss just going onto my blog and writing about my day. Reading all of my old blogs that are just daily recaps made me realize that I’ve been doing a lot less actual writing on this blog, and while I definitely don’t want to relive the past Greg ‘personal pan pizza’ days I think it would be more rewarding for future Greg to reach a comfortable average between the two.
And fo’ the record…if I don’t journal at least every other day in Asia, you all have full permission to PUNCH MY LIGHTS OUT! (You should know in late June-early July whether I make good on that, and if I fall short reply to a post and let me know when you want to schedule muh beat downz)
